These are descriptions of sound spectra, not prescriptions. Your room, speaker, headphones, hearing and the disturbance itself all change what you perceive.

What is white noise?

White noise contains equal power at every frequency measured in equal-sized frequency bands. Because there are many more high-frequency bands than low-frequency ones, it often sounds bright or hiss-like—similar to radio static, strong airflow or a steady spray.

That broad, crisp texture can provide useful contrast against variable sounds such as speech and intermittent household noise. But some listeners find its higher-frequency energy tiring, especially in a quiet bedroom. Lower the level before deciding that you need a different colour.

Think of white noise as:A detailed, even acoustic texture—not silence and not active noise cancellation.

What is pink noise?

Pink noise reduces power as frequency rises, creating roughly equal energy in each octave. To many listeners it sounds smoother and less sharp than white noise. Natural sounds such as steady rain or surf may have a pink-like character, although real recordings are not mathematically exact pink noise.

Pink noise can be a comfortable middle ground when you want coverage across the spectrum without as much brightness. Claims that it is categorically “best for sleep” go further than current evidence supports.

What is brown noise?

Brown noise—also called Brownian or red noise—reduces high-frequency power more steeply than pink noise. The name comes from Brownian motion, not from the colour brown. Its low-weighted spectrum is often perceived as a deep roar, distant waterfall or low rumble.

It may feel less intrusive to people who dislike hiss, but a phone speaker may not reproduce its deepest frequencies well. Brown noise is not automatically better for bass from neighbours: low-frequency building noise can be difficult to mask safely and may call for physical sound reduction instead.

How to choose a noise colour

  1. Name the disturbance.Is it speech, snoring, traffic, footsteps, office chatter or a low bass vibration?
  2. Start with the softest comfortable option.Try pink noise first if white feels sharp, or brown if you prefer a deeper texture.
  3. Use the lowest useful volume.Raise the level only until the distraction becomes less prominent. Masking does not require overpowering it.
  4. Add a natural layer if helpful.Rain, fan, airflow or ocean sounds can make a synthetic noise texture feel easier to live with.
  5. Reassess after a few minutes.If the masking sound itself holds your attention, change the balance or choose another sound.

Is one noise colour best for sleep or focus?

Current research does not establish a universal winner. A systematic review of adult sleep studies found no strong overall evidence supporting auditory stimulation, while individual studies reported mixed results. Another review rated evidence for continuous broadband noise improving sleep as very low. Personal preference, noise sensitivity, environment and study design vary substantially.

That does not mean masking cannot feel useful. It means Audami should be described as a comfort and focus tool—not a treatment or guaranteed sleep intervention.

Keep the level comfortable

Do not turn masking sound up simply to overpower a loud environment. The World Health Organization recommends keeping personal-device volume below 60% of maximum and, when monitoring is available, below an average of 80 dB. Listening risk depends on both level and duration.

Keep alarms and important surroundings audible. For persistent or very loud environmental noise, physical reduction, hearing protection or professional advice may be more appropriate than adding more sound.
