Sound masking makes contrast smaller

Imagine a quiet room where a single conversation is easy to follow. Add a steady, unobtrusive background sound and the conversation may become less distinct. The conversation has not vanished; the difference between it and the acoustic background has narrowed.

That is masking. The added sound can be broadband noise, airflow, a fan-like texture, rain or a blend. Effective masking should sit in the background rather than become a new distraction.

These approaches can complement one another. A better window seal may reduce traffic first; a low masking layer may then make the remaining variation less noticeable.

What kinds of sound can masking soften?

Masking is generally more useful for intermittent or information-rich distractions than for extremely loud sound. Speech, a partner’s snoring, distant traffic changes, office chatter and some neighbour noise may become less prominent when the masking spectrum overlaps them.

A broad, consistent layer can reduce intelligibility and the attention pulled toward individual words.

Snoring

Steady coloured noise and airflow textures can soften contrast, though results depend on pitch, variation and proximity.

Traffic

A mix can make passing vehicles less abrupt. Deep engine or building vibration is harder to address.

Household variation

Doors, plumbing and footsteps may feel less sudden, but impacts and vibrations may remain obvious.

What sound masking cannot do

  • It cannot stop sound travelling through walls, floors or windows.
  • It cannot reliably hide alarms, shouting or other very loud events at a safe listening level.
  • It is not hearing protection and should never replace ear protection in hazardous noise.
  • It does not diagnose, monitor or treat snoring, insomnia, tinnitus or any medical condition.
  • It should not be used so loudly that important surrounding sounds disappear.

If masking requires an uncomfortable level, address the source or sound path instead of continuing to raise the volume.

How to use masking without chasing volume

  1. Reduce what you can first.Close gaps, move away from the source or use soft furnishings where appropriate.
  2. Place sound near you.A modest local level is often preferable to filling the entire room loudly.
  3. Choose a broad texture.Compare white, pink and brown noise, then add rain or airflow if that feels more natural.
  4. Increase slowly.Stop when the distraction becomes less attention-grabbing—not when it disappears.
  5. Keep safety cues audible.Test alarms and remain aware of children, traffic and other important sounds.

Comfortable means low enough for long listening

WHO guidance recommends keeping personal-device volume below 60% of maximum and below an average of 80 dB when monitoring is available. Lower is better when it still serves the purpose. Duration matters alongside level.
